October’s Blooms: Marigold and Cosmos
Share
October arrives with two flowers that could hardly look more different, yet somehow belong beautifully together.
The Marigold and the Cosmos.
One is bold, warm and full of colour.
The other is light, delicate and beautifully balanced.
Together, they speak of joy, remembrance, harmony and the different ways we carry meaning through life.
The Meaning Behind October’s Birth Flowers
With its rich shades of yellow, orange and gold, the Marigold is difficult to overlook. It has long been associated with warmth, joy and strong emotions, while also carrying deeper meanings of remembrance.
Cosmos has a gentler presence. Its daisy-like petals sit neatly around its centre, giving the flower an almost effortless sense of balance. It is often associated with harmony, peace, love and order.
One feels fiery.
The other feels calm.
And perhaps October needs a little of both.
Marigold: Warmth, Joy and Remembrance
There is something wonderfully confident about a Marigold.
Its colours feel like sunshine, even as the year begins moving towards its later months.
Because of this, Marigolds have come to represent optimism, warmth and joy in many traditions.
But this flower also carries another side.
Marigolds have long been used in traditions of remembrance, particularly in Mexico's Día de los Muertos celebrations, where their bright petals are used to honour loved ones who have passed.
It gives the Marigold an interesting depth.
It can be joyful and reflective at the same time.
Perhaps that is a reminder that the people and moments we cherish do not simply disappear from our lives. Sometimes they stay with us through memories, traditions and the little things that remind us of them.
Cosmos: Harmony in the Little Things
Cosmos feels almost like the opposite.
Its petals are simple, open and evenly arranged around its centre.
Even its name carries meaning, coming from a word associated with order and harmony.
Cosmos is often linked to balance, peace and love.
And there is something refreshing about that.
Life does not always feel balanced.
There are busy seasons.
Quiet seasons.
Moments when everything seems to happen at once.
Perhaps Cosmos reminds us that balance does not necessarily mean having everything perfectly organised.
Sometimes, it simply means knowing when to pause.
To make room for what matters.
To find a little calm amongst everything else.
What October’s Flowers Teach Us
Together, Marigold and Cosmos create an interesting pairing.
The Marigold tells us to live with warmth.
The Cosmos reminds us to find balance.
One encourages us to feel deeply.
The other encourages us to breathe.
And maybe we need both.
To celebrate the joyful moments while remembering where we came from.
To move forward while still making space for rest.
To hold on to what matters without carrying everything at once.
A Gentle Reflection for October
October feels like a good month to check in with ourselves.
What has brought us joy lately?
What do we want to remember?
And amongst everything we are doing, have we left ourselves enough room to simply be?
Perhaps the Marigold reminds us to bring a little more warmth into the lives of those around us.
And perhaps Cosmos reminds us that there can be beauty in simplicity and balance.
Two very different flowers.
Two reminders worth carrying into the month ahead.
From Flowers to Keepsakes
Flowers often carry meanings that words cannot quite express.
That is something I have always loved about creating with florals at Haeng Bok Clay.
A bloom can remind someone of a person.
A colour can bring back a memory.
A tiny arrangement can mark a celebration.
It is also part of the idea behind HBC Bloom Bar, where guests choose their own handmade polymer clay flowers and turn them into mini floral keepsakes.
Sometimes the bloom they choose is simply the one they find beautiful.
Sometimes there is a reason behind it.
Either way, that little moment of choice makes every arrangement slightly different.
