Materials & Sensitive Ears FAQ
Materials & Sensitive Ears — Frequently Asked Questions
We know that choosing jewellery for sensitive ears takes more than a glance at the product photo. This page explains exactly what materials we use, how our pieces are finished, and what to keep in mind when you shop.
What metals are used in Haeng Bok Clay earring posts and findings?
Our earring posts and findings are made from surgical-grade stainless steel (316L) or sterling silver (925), depending on the design. Specific material information is listed in each product description. If you have a known metal allergy, please check the individual listing or contact us before purchasing.
Are your earrings hypoallergenic?
We use materials that are widely considered suitable for sensitive ears — including surgical-grade stainless steel and sterling silver. However, the term "hypoallergenic" means less likely to cause a reaction, not reaction-free. Individual sensitivities vary, and we are unable to guarantee that any piece will be suitable for every wearer. If you have a confirmed metal allergy (particularly to nickel, cobalt, or certain alloys), we recommend consulting your dermatologist before purchasing.
Do your pieces contain nickel?
316L surgical stainless steel contains a trace amount of nickel that is bound tightly within its alloy structure, which is why it is generally well-tolerated by those with mild nickel sensitivities. It is not a nickel-free metal. Sterling silver (925) is an alloy of silver and copper and does not contain nickel. If you have a diagnosed nickel allergy, please review the material listed for each specific design before purchasing.
Are the polymer clay components safe for skin contact?
Our polymer clay elements are cured and hardened before finishing, and they do not come into direct contact with the ear canal or piercing. They sit away from the skin as a decorative element. The clay itself is non-toxic once cured.
How should I care for my earrings to maintain their finish?
- Remove earrings before swimming, bathing, or applying skincare, perfume, or hairspray.
- Store in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight to preserve the clay's colour and coating integrity.
- Wipe metal findings gently with a soft, dry cloth after wear.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture, which can affect metal coatings over time.
What coatings or platings are used on the metal findings?
Where gold-tone findings are used, they are gold-plated over a base of surgical stainless steel or brass. Plating is a surface finish and will naturally wear with regular use and exposure to moisture. We do not use nickel as a base layer on our plated findings. For longevity, follow the care guidance above.
Can I wear these earrings if I have freshly pierced ears?
We recommend that freshly pierced ears (within 6–8 weeks of piercing) be fitted only with the implant-grade metals specified by your piercing professional. Our earrings are designed for healed piercings. Please consult your piercer before wearing fashion jewellery in a new piercing.
I had a reaction to a previous pair — what should I do?
If you experience redness, itching, or irritation, remove the earrings immediately and allow your skin to recover. A reaction may indicate a sensitivity to a specific metal or coating. We encourage you to consult a dermatologist for a patch test to identify your specific trigger before purchasing again. You are also welcome to reach out to us — we are happy to share the exact material specifications for any design.
A note on the limits of the hypoallergenic claim
We are transparent about what our materials are and are not. We choose findings that minimise common irritants, but we do not make medical claims about suitability for any individual. The information on this page is provided for general guidance only and does not constitute medical advice. When in doubt, please consult a healthcare professional.
